MICROCOSMOS FILM
Ashuelot Valley Environmental Observatory (AVEO) and the Keene State College Film Society are thrilled to present a one-night-only showing of a stellar feature-length nature documentary. Filmed with high-powered macro lenses, Microcosmos presents an exquisite bug’s eye view of the world, best seen on a big screen. The film will be shown in the Putnam Theater, located in the Redfern Arts Center on Brickyard Pond at Keene State College on Wednesday, February 11 at 7 or 9:15 PM.
As added incentive for those of you with an entomological bent, AVEO will be setting up microscopes in the theater so you can get an up-close-and-personal look at real live aquatic insects from local streams. Come a few minutes early or stay late to take a look!
Unless the viewer has ever been inside an anthill, "Microcosmos" is sure to reveal a strange and transfixing secret universe, one in which even the physics of splashing raindrops looks suddenly new.

Aquatic insects and other river-dwelling macroinvertebrates are important indicators of river health because some of these organisms are sensitive to deteriorating water quality. The Ashuelot River Local Advisory Committee conducts chemical and bacteriological water quality monitoring in the Ashuelot River; to supplement these chemical and bacteriological data and to provide a deeper, long-term picture of the river’s health, AVEO volunteers monitor aquatic macroinvertebrate communities in the Ashuelot River and its tributaries.
Macroinvertebrates are sampled and preserved in late summer, then identified in the laboratory during informal "Bug Nights" in the colder months.
Bug Nights and Afternoons are free, fun, informal, and a great way to learn about aquatic macroinvertebrate identification!
